Washington Freedom beat San Francisco Unicorns by 7 runs

Commentary

5:39 AM IST Then there were two - What a couple of days we have had in the 2026 MLC playoffs, and we have witnessed three high-scoring and entertaining games, a couple of them really going down to the wire. But now, the grand Finale is all set, and it will be Los Angeles Knight Riders taking on Washington Freedom at the Coliseum in Oakland for the coveted trophy. The Final is scheduled for Saturday, 18 July, beginning at 11.30 pm GMT. As usual, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up as well. Until then, goodbye and Cheers!
5:35 AM IST The winning captain of Washington Freedom - Steve Smith says that they will take the day off and then prepare for the final. Mentions that it was a hell of an effort, as it got wet out there late on, and applauds Saurabh Netravalkar for the way he bowled that 19th over. Further adds that everything depended on the first ball, and once Saurabh nailed the first yorker, the plan was to keep going for it. Mentions that this team loves playing together and it's been an amazing three years and hopefully, they can win the final. Adds that Ponting is fine, and jokes that their owner nearly had a heart attack watching the final over.
5:33 AM IST Player of the Match - Andries Gous gets the accolade for his fine knock of 73 off 40 balls. He says that for him, personally, he loves this team and wants to do well for his teammates and the coaches and that's all the motivation he needs. He adds that they had to keep pushing given the nature of the wicket and talks about playing in the Final, their third one now, and hopes that they can win it. On that missed run out, Gous says that he felt that he had cost them the tournament, but thankfully, things worked out.
5:29 AM IST The Presentation ceremony...
5:34 AM IST Let's now hear from the Unicorns skipper - Matthew Short says that it has been a couple of disappointing days. Feels that they were in a position to win both of those games, but couldn't take the opportunity. Reckons that after what happened last night, any score was possible to gun down, especially under the lights. On the season, Short says that it's been special to play the playoffs in front of the home fans at the Coliseum and thanks them for their support.
5:28 AM IST Short the saviour, almost - Needing 239 for the win, San Francisco Unicorns lost their openers early and were teetering along in the Powerplay. Matthew Short then went berserk in the 6th over and got them back in the contest. For a while, SFU managed to keep in touch with the required rate but kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. With the score being 1586 in 14.5 overs, the Unicorns were really up against it. However, Short kept fighting and brought up a sensational ton and finally got some support from the other end as Xavier Bartlett breathed new life into the chase. Unfortunately, their antics weren't enough as the Unicorns lost by a small margin of 7 runs.
5:25 AM IST Coming clutch in the 19th - The game swayed one way and then the other and with 48 needed off 18 balls, Washington Freedom were favorites. However, Ben Dwarshuis, who had bowled really well up until then, conceded 19 runs and the momentum was with the Unicorns. Then Saurabh Netravalkar stepped up and bowled a sensational penultimate over, conceding just 7 runs and that put all the pressure back on the hosts. Mitchell Owen also did well to hold his nerve after being hit for a six and a four off the first 2 balls of the final over and the Freedom will now have a chance for their second MLC title.
5:21 AM IST MLC gold - Another humdinger of a contest and the 2026 MLC playoff games are turning out not to be for the fainthearted. Washington Freedom pip San Francisco Unicorns in another classic and set a date with Los Angeles Knight Riders in the Grand Finale. Absolute jubilation in the Freedom camp and rightly so, but spare a thought for Matthew Short, who nearly pulled it off all by himself.

Would you believe it? Not once but Andries Gous has missed the run-out opportunity twice. Full and around off, Matthew Short hits it down to long off and the batters push hard for two. Bartlett is quick to turn back but Short is labouring a bit. The throw does come in at the right end, towards the keeper. Gous flicks off one bail before even collecting the ball and then he misses the run out on the next attempt, finally managing to dislodge the bails on the second attempt. Short dives in and the third umpire confirms that he's in.

4:28 AM IST DRINKS! This has been a pretty even contest so far, but San Francisco Unicorns have probably lost one too many wickets for their liking. With 130 still needed off just 62 balls, everything rides on the SFU skipper Matthew Short. Washington Freedom will be happy to keep picking up wickets at regular intervals as it will only put more pressure on Short. Given the target is such a big one, a couple more wickets here could really peg the Unicorns on the back foot. With that said, Hassan Khan walks out to bat next.

Rachin Ravindra to Aaron Hardie, no run

OUT! LBW! A confident appeal for LBW, and up goes the finger. Aaron Hardie does review it, but it did seem pretty adjacent. Rachin Ravindra tosses the ball up, on a length and pushes it towards the stumps. Hardie gets across to the off side and looks to sweep it away but misses and gets pinged on the pads. The third umpire confirms with UltraEdge first and doesn't find any bat involved.
