Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets

Commentary

5:43 PM IST With this dominant victory, Mumbai Indians have surged to third place on the table with 10 points, just behind the Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals. While Sunrisers Hyderabad now face the daunting task of winning all six remaining matches to have any chance at qualification, which is a steep mountain to climb indeed. Next up, the IPL action continues with another reverse fixture as Royal Challengers Bengaluru welcome Rajasthan Royals to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. It's a tale of contrasting fortunes with RCB riding a wave of momentum while RR search for answers and repairs. Don't miss the first ball on Thursday, April 24th at 7:30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), and be sure to tune in earlier for our comprehensive build-up and pre-match breakdown. Till then, cheers and take care!
5:54 PM IST Trent Boult is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant 4-fer. He collects the award and is up for a chat. Begins by expressing his happiness and says it feels nice to contribute to a big game. Mentions he just stuck to the old thumb rule to just hit the wicket. Also appreciates that Deepak Chahar did a tremendous job from the other end, bowling four on the trot. Says they are just trying to keep things very simple and trying to put pressure on the batters. Also feels nice to see a couple of good catches being held in the field. Says he'd like to bowl four overs in a row and let it swing, but that doesn't always happen. Also adds that he is always ready whenever he is called upon.
5:38 PM IST The victorious captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, says it's good to have such wins and is glad the boys are building crucial momentum. Appreciates the way the team clicks as one and lauds everybody who contributed to this game. Says captaincy is more about instincts, and he likes to read the game and react accordingly, which is why he bowled Deepak out up front. Adds that he wanted to take a chance with Vignesh Puthur, considering the batters wouldn't go after Santner. Concludes that overall, there is always room for improvement, and they will look forward to it.
5:31 PM IST It is time for the Presentation Ceremony...
5:30 PM IST Suryakumar Yadav of Mumbai Indians is now up for a chat. He says that it was really important to come positively in this game. Expresses that they are playing a good brand of cricket and want to continue with the momentum. Says winning four in a row is really special. Adds that Rohit Sharma made his job very easy and he knew exactly what he needed to do when he walked in to bat. Says Rohit coming to form is a big boost to the side. On the sweep shots, he says you need to keep practising those in the nets and execute them in the game as they are less-risk and high reward. Concludes by saying he tries to stay positive and back his strengths.
5:25 PM IST The captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Pat Cummins, says they just couldn't quite go about with the bat and after losing a couple of quick wickets, they needed somebody to steady the ship and they lost a few too many wickets. Mentions that it's about assessing the wicket in every game and starting from scratch. Adds that things haven't worked out well for them this season and that's how the T20 format plays. Concludes that they will have to try and assess the conditions quickly with a few away games next and try to navigate accordingly.
5:24 PM IST Earlier in the game, Sunrisers Hyderabad were invited to bat first on what appeared to be a tricky deck. They had a forgetful start as they lost their dangerous top three with only 13 on the board. Heinrich Klaasen stepped up big time, and along with him, SRH's impact player, Abhinav Manohar, launched a brave counter-attack, forming a recovery partnership of 99 runs off 63 balls. Klaasen struck a defiant fifty, and with a resisting 43 from Manohar, SRH posted 143 on the board. In the first half of the inning, MI held all the aces, but kind of let the momentum slip through, off some tactical errors. However, Boult finished with a superb 4-fer, while Chahar snagged two, with Bumrah and Pandya taking one each.
5:24 PM IST The finishing touch came from the familiar combination of Rohit and SKY, who, just like their previous outing, sealed the game with a decisive 53-run stand. Rohit Sharma scoring back-to-back fifties was just the cherry on the cake. SRH's bowlers put up a decent fight, but they simply didn't have enough runs to defend, and with Shami waiting unused in the Impact Players list as SRH opted for Abhinav's batting instead, their bowling attack looked significantly undermanned against Mumbai's surging batting firepower.
5:23 PM IST A rock-solid platform set the stage as the duo navigated the middle overs with impressive composure, blending classic cricket shots with strategic aggression. Their fifty-run partnership highlighted smart batting decisions rather than wild swinging. Though Jacks eventually fell, Mumbai had already knocked off more than half the target before reaching the halfway point of their innings.
5:22 PM IST Despite losing Ryan Rickelton pretty early inside the restrictions, Rohit Sharma, ascending in form, stepped up and charged Mumbai Indians with a flurry of boundaries and sixes. Will Jacks, making the most of his promotion to number three, complemented Sharma brilliantly as MI cruised to a commanding 56/1 before the field restrictions lifted.
5:31 PM IST Often labeled as slow out of the blocks in the IPL, Mumbai Indians have roared back into contention, hitting their stride at precisely the right moment in the season. After stumbling through the early phase with just one victory from their opening five fixtures, they've completely transformed their season by stringing together four straight wins after that. Also, these two massive wins, one against CSK a few moons back, and this one, will do their net run rate a world of good. And equally worrisome situation for Sunrisers Hyderabad as this defeat marks their sixth of the season, out of eight games, almost making their playoff possibilities mathematically impossible now.

Zeeshan Ansari to Suryakumar Yadav, 4 runs

ballImg80.8kph

DROPPED AND FOUR! That pretty much sums up the game for SRH. Mumbai Indians win by 7 wickets and do the double over the men in orange. Zeeshan Ansari bowls the wrong'un, on a shorter length, on off, Suryakumar Yadav rocks back and pulls it to deep mid-wicket. Nitish Kumar Reddy moves across to his left and settles under to take a reverse cup catch, but loses the ball in the lights and lets it pass through his hands. The ball bounces behind and goes over the fence for a boundary.

Eshan Malinga to Rohit Sharma, no run

ballImg142.2kph

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! A soft, soft dismissal for Rohit Sharma! Eshan Malinga fires the ball on a fuller length, angling on the leg stump line with a hint of reverse, Rohit Sharma gets tilted as he tries to drill the ball to the leg side, but the bat twists at the point of contact, and he fails to keep it along the ground. The ball gets chipped in the air towards the mid-wicket region. Abhishek Sharma moves to his left and takes a sharp catch. Rohit Sharma departs for a quickfire 70 (46).

Harshal Patel to Rohit Sharma, 4 runs

FOUR! Classic! Back of a length, outside off, Rohit Sharma stands tall, uses the width offered, and executes the square cut with ease. Pierces the gap between backward point and short third for a boundary.

5:01 PM IST Strategic Break! With only 38 runs needed off 42 balls, Mumbai Indians are cruising toward what looks like their fourth consecutive win. It’s safe to say the game slipped away from Sunrisers Hyderabad quite some time ago. Despite giving it their all, the bowlers simply didn’t have enough runs to play with. And with Rohit Sharma in beast mode, taking the attack to the bowlers, it's now just a matter of when, not if, this chase gets wrapped up. Unless there's a miracle brewing, Mumbai have one hand firmly on those two points.

4:34 PM IST Strategic Break. Despite losing Ryan Rickelton in the second over, Mumbai Indians are cruising nicely along. Rohit Sharma has provided that early impetus into the innings, with a strong foundation for the chase. Will Jacks has played a good supporting hand from the other end as well. It is all about consolidation from here on, as MI just need a tinge above run-a-ball to win. However, a quick couple of wickets will help SRH to get back in the game, still marginally. We saw the ball hold on the surface in the first innings, and the likes of Unadkat and Harshal might come into play, with their slower ones. But it is all about execution and controlling the game in the middle overs through spin, where SRH looks a bit depleted. Harshal Patel (1-0-2-0) to continue after the break.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! An early breakthrough for the Sunrisers Hyderabad! Also, Jaydev Unadkat completes 100 wickets in his IPL career! Bowls at a gentle pace, on the back of a length, on middle. It lands and holds a bit onto the surface and arrives milliseconds late to the batter. It is enough to deceive the batter as Ryan Rickelton pushes through early and ends up chipping it off the higher part of the bat, back to the bowler. Jaydev Unadkat on his follow-through, sticks out his left hand, and snaffles a one-handed catch.

Misfield, allows an extra run! Around off, on a length, Ryan Rickelton prods forward and taps it to the mid off region. Nitish Kumar Reddy from mid off and Aniket Verma from short cover almost run into each other, with neither managing to stop the ball. This indecision leads to the ball rolling behind to the long off region, which allows the batters to hare back for the second.
