India vs Australia Live score: FOUR! Khawaja nails the reverse-sweep

Second reverse sweep of the over, he had done it off the first ball and now off the fourth. Unlike the last time though, this time Khawaja places it perfectly and it runs to the boundary. A bye off the next ball as Bharat gets surprised by the bounce and turn and Australia are 60/1 in 17 overs. Khawaja on 35 off 55 balls.

India vs Australia 2nd Test live: GONE! Shami gets Warner!

And finally one of the edges leads to a wicket. Round the wicket from Shami, straightens him up and the edge flies to Bharat. Warner never looked settled there,  he has worked hard but it hasn't really been a convincing innings.

Day 1 Live score: FOUR! Warner in control at last, Australia go past 50

India have been going with the short ball ploy from the pacers and this time and Warner has been hit twice. He somehow fended off one to the fine leg boundary off Shami. Then he hangs back and ramps the next delivery wide of slips. He knew exactly what he was doing there and that brings about the 50-run partnership for the Australian openers. Exactly what the visitors would have been hoping for.

IND vs AUS 2nd Test Live Score: Shami returns

There have been quite a few inside edges that have just missed the stumps and balls that have beaten the outside edges of both batters and they have somehow survived the hour. Shami has replaced Siraj and so India continue to have pace from one end. Australia 37/0 in 13 overs.

India vs Australia 2nd Test live: SIX! Khawaja charges at Ashwin!

Khawaja had prodded the previous delivery in the air to short leg and the ball seemed to have bounced just in front of Iyer in that position. Khawaja responds by charging at the next delivery which is tossed up outside off and pumping it over the bowler's head to the boundary.

Day 1 Live score: More Siraj fire for Warner!

Australia 26/0 in 10 overs. Siraj ends that over with a brute of a bouncer. Warner rushed into the pull and seems to have top edged it to the helmet. He takes it off immediately and takes off his gloves but his face betrays no emotion as he returns Siraj's stare briefly. He has scored 6 in 30, Khawaja has scored 14 off 31.

India vs Australia 2nd Test live: Warner getting some treatment

Siraj continues after Ashwin's over. He bangs it in short against Khawaja for the third ball. Khawaja works it towards the leg side and Siraj then bowls the same ball. Warner is surprised by it, attempts a pull shot and inside edges it straight to his elbow. He is wincing in pain as the physio tends to him. Warner has got two precious run and been in the middle for 22 balls, he has  worked hard and he would hate to have to go off now.

India vs Australia 2nd Test live: FOUR! Runs off the bat at last

Lot of devilish moment for the pacers. There was a big loud appeal from the Indians off the very first ball of the 2nd over bowled by Siraj, he had got a wicket off the first ball in the last match as well, remember. Siraj then veers towards Khawaja's leg and the left-hander clips it away to the boundary. Australia are 8/0.

“It is an honour to receive this cap from you, legends like you have inspired me (On getting the cap from Sunil Gavaskar). I wanted to play for India as a youngster but I never thought I'd get to 100 Test matches. Test cricket is the ultimate format for me, it challenges you just like life. To all the youngsters, I'd encourage y'all to work hard to play Test cricket for India. I'd like to thank my wife, my family, everyone in BCCI and all my teammates who've supported me throughout this journey.”

India vs Australia 2nd Test live: What Rohit Sharma

“We'd have batted first as well. The pitch is dry, but I think the application we showed last game put the toss away from the game. You just have to come out and play good cricket, and that's been the chat in the group to not worry about the toss. (On Pujara's 100th Test) We are all thrilled for him, his family is here as well. 100 Test matches isn't easy, there have been plenty of ups and downs in his career. One change for us - Shreyas Iyer is in for Surya.”

Day 1 Live score: The pitch

“Pretty good for batting first up but it will be pretty challenging for our batters,” says Matthew Hayden, who gave the pitch report with Sanjay Manjrekar. First reaction is it looks better than the first Test. It is a two-faced pitch which looks good in the centre but changes as you come closer to the stumps, that's where the spinners will be effective. It looks like a Day 3 wicket right now with big cracks already, right in the zone for the spinners. The groundsmen though say it is unlikely to break up.

India vs Australia 2nd Test live: Australia looking to breach the fortress

The Arun Jaitley Stadium, still known to many by its erstwhile name of Feroz Shah Kotla after the 14th century fortress situated nearby, is one of the oldest Test venues in the country. The last time India lost a Test at this venue was in November 1987 against the mighty West Indies. Since March 1993, India have won every Test they have played here except for the 2008 Test against Australia which had ended in a draw. India's victory at the Gabba during their 2020/21 tour of the country was seen as a breach of a fortress as Australia had not lost a Test there since November 1988. Considering just how alien these conditions are to Australia, a win here might just turn out to be a comparable achievement.

Day 1 Live score: Australia's spin composition

Word from the middle is that Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy have painted their marks. No sign of Mark Kuhnemann. Remember that Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green could return for this game as well.

IND vs AUS 2nd Test Live Score: Pujara's trysts with Australia

Almost every team that has faced India since Pujara made his debut have been put through the ringer by the right-hander but Australia are probably the ones who have born the worst of it. in 21 Tests that he has played against them, Pujara has scored 1900 runs at an average of 52.77 with five centuries and 10 half-centuries. Reports of Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood saying that he is just tired of seeing Pujara's face shows that the Aussies haven't really had the best time facing him.

India vs Australia Live score: Virat Kohli on Pujara's special day

“This is a very special day for a very special guy. Puji congratulations on your 100th Test. You have had a long journey, full of hard work, persistence, grit, comebacks. That is what you are known for. I wish you all the best, enjoy the moment. It is a big occasion not just for you but for your family, the people who have supported you throughout the journey. It is a big achievement to have played for India for so long,” said Kohli in a video on BCCI.tv.

“My favourite knock will always be the hundred you got in Southampton in 2018. All the other batters had gotten out, you stuck in there and got 120 or 130 odd runs. The way you played will always stay in my memory. Among all your great knocks that is the top of the pile. Hopefully in your 100th Test you get a big one for us.”

Day 1 Live score: What Pujara had to say about the occassion

"When I started playing cricket and then made my (Test) debut, I never thought about playing hundred Test matches. For me, it is always about being in the present and not thinking too far ahead. So, for me, I thought before this series started and that's when I realised that I will be playing my hundredth Test match. In a career, you always go through ups and downs, and you have to fight through those periods," Cheteshwar Pujara said in the pre-match press conference on Thursday.

IND vs AUS 2nd Test Live Score: Hello and welcome!

Virat Kohli is the only player of this current squad to have made his 100th Test appearance but he will be finding some company today. And the person who is set to give him company, is the man with whom he has spend many an hour in the middle, grinding out opposition bowlers after they got past India's opening pair. Cheteshwar Pujara has often been called a hark back to a bygone era, where batters loved to just defend the danger out of bowling attacks before making hay. No team knows it better than Australia and it is only fitting that Pujara is playing his 100th Test against them. He made his Test debut against them in 2010 and played some of his greatest, career-defining knocks against the Aussies at home and, quite famously, away.
