After toss, Dhawan said, "We would have bowled first actually, there is going to be dew in the second innings and we are gonna take advantage of that. Two changes for us. Washington Sundar coming in and Shahbaz Ahmed is making his debut today. Ruturaj and Ravi Bishnoi are out."

After toss, Maharaj said, "We are going to have to bat, looks like a good wicket. Shamsi and Temba didn't wake up feeling too well this morning, so Reeza Hendricks and Bjorn Fortuin are coming in for them. Hopefully we can try and utilize the conditions, assess it upfront and play it from there."

Ahead of the match, South Africa's Maharaj said, "The Indian spinners are world class."

"They get exposed to the best batters in the world and you can see their skill levels. I am still learning my trade when it comes to spin bowling and I think I can take a leaf out of most of the Indian spinners' books", he further added.

Ahead of the match, Thakur said, "Everyone misses Dhoni because his vast experience matters a lot for everyone. He has played more than 300 ODIs, and more than 90 plus Test matches. It's very difficult to find someone as experienced as him. Our generation has played with him hence we do miss him."

"As far as consistency goes, I think even bowlers playing for other teams tend to get hit for a lot of runs when they play in India. In the T20 series against South Africa, if you are going to criticise the bowlers you need to criticise their bowlers too. We won the series after all, their bowlers also got hit for a lot of runs."

He also asked everyone to look at the conditions before questioning the bowlers. "“I feel before you ask about someone's consistency, you should check what conditions they played in and how the pitch was. Many a times in an ODI game a team scores more than 350 runs and that is a situation where all bowlers are taken for runs. But are the opposition also able to score runs. Whatever matches happen here are never one sided. Regardless of how the pitch, we have always given a good fight. We may have lost one or two matches here and there but we have won maximum matches. So I feel there is a lot of consistency within this team," he said.

Sundar has replaced Chahar for the remaining part of the series. According to BCCI, "Chahar had a stiffness in his back after the third and final T20I against South Africa in Indore and did not feature in India’s Playing XI in the first ODI in Lucknow."

"He will now head back to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and will be monitored by the Medical Team there", the statement further added.

Both sides have faced each other 88 times with South Africa leading 50-35 against India. Three matches haven't produced any result.

The visitors won the first ODI by nine runs in Lucknow. Chasing a target of 250, India could only reached 240 for eight in 40 overs. Although, Sanju Samson smacked an unbeaten knock of 86 runs off 63 balls, it still wasn't enough as Lungi Ngidi's three-wicket haul drove South Africa to victory.

Initially, an unbeaten knock of 75 runs off 63 balls by David Miller helped South Africa post 249 for four in 40 overs.
