Suryakumar Yadav earlier smashed 58 in 26 balls in his first match as India's full-time T20I captain while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill blazed an opening stand of 74 in the first six overs as India put a score of 213/7 batting first in the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. Suryakumar covered up for Rishabh Pant's struggles in the middle overs and the Indian captain raced past his 20th T20I half-century in just 22 balls. He was then trapped LBW to an absolute torpedo from Matheesha Pathirana and walked on 58 off 26 balls. Pathirana then sent back Hardik Pandya and Riyan Parag with his slinging yorkers.

Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill unleashed carnage on Sri Lanka after India lost the toss. While Gill normally hangs back and Jaiswal creams the boundaries, both players went after the bowling this time and India managed to get over 70 runs in the powerplay. Gill fell off the last ball of the sixth over on 34 off 16 to Dilshan Madushanka. Jaiswal was then dismissed off the very first ball of the next over by Wanindu Hasaranga on 40 off 21. Their opening partnership brought in 74 runs in just 36 balls.
