23:45 hrs IST: That is all from IPL 2018. It has been a roller coaster journey and it ends the Twenty20 carnival. Good night!
23:42 hrs IST: MS Dhoni: I feel it’s a really good batting effort. But we always had the belief that we had the firepower in the middle overs. There was no plan to send Bravo up ahead. Rayudu has been our main batters, so we had protection in the middle. Every win is special, so difficult to pick any one win. Lot of people talk about numbers, statistics, so tonight’s 27th, my jersey number is 7, and this was our seventh final. We talked a lot about age, but what’s more important is the fitness. Rayudu, at 33, it doesn’t really matter. That’s what more matters than age. If you ask most captains, they want players who move well on the field. Doesn’t matter if you’re 19-20 years old. We knew our shortcomings, and we were aware of it. Age is just a number, but you have to be very fit.
23:34 hrs IST: Stephen Fleming, CSK coach: We stayed pretty consistent with the core of our team when others kept chopping and changing. It’s one thing that players are older, but it’s the professionalism that we got look into as well. MS Dhoni handles me (smiles). It’s about man-management.
23:30 hrs IST: Kane Williamson: We thought it would be a very competitve total. Hats off, Shane Watson comes and gets 120 not out in the final. It’s frustrating, but CSK were deserved winners. A new bunch of guys in SRH, a great bunch of guys in the unit. Showed great character. It was a great experience leading this side, shame that we couldn’t win the final
23:23 hrs IST: Tom Moody, Sunrisers Hyderabad coach: Shane Watson’s innings was just out of the box; they needed something special and that’s what Watson provided. I think the season has been really good.
23:17 hrs IST: Rishabh Pant, Emerging player of the year: I enjoyed the whole tournament; but it didn’t go well for the team though. When you play a lot of matches you get confidence and that helps me and the team.
23:11 hrs IST: Shane Watson, Man of the Match: It’s been a special season to be honest. To get a special season especially after the last season with RCB. It means a lot to be with a franchise like CSK. After those first ten balls I was only hoping to catch up to at least a run-a-ball. Bhuvi is really good with the new ball and was lucky to get the opportunity to catch up. It was good that I got a couple of boundaries to hit and get on par to take it from there. The good thing is that I wouldn’t be playing for the next three-four months; feels great. It gives me plenty of time to recover.
22:57 hrs IST: Harbhajan Singh: Fourth IPL title for me and I am glad. I mean considering that Kane was in good form and they had a lot of middle-order batsmen who were right-handers, Dhoni was right that he needed someone who would take the ball away from the batsman. We have seen wrist spinners bowling more and more overs in the IPL compared to finger spinners
22:52 hrs IST: Lungi Ngidi: Not many people get to experience such a moment. It’s lovely to have the death bowling responsibility on your shoulders and take it in your stride, one ball at a time in a pressure situation and it is great to help the team win.
22:50 hrs IST: Rayudu: I worked really hard for it and am glad that I could hit the winning runs. Initially the wicket looked a little slow, it was damp, got much quicker and I am glad we could chase it down.
22:46 hrs IST: From being labelled Dad’s Army to now three-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings have made a grand comeback to the IPL after being suspended for two years. The team played to their strengths and the bowling, batting and fielding all clicked at vital moments. They were the only team to beat all the teams at least once in this edition.
22:40 hrs IST: Ambati Rayudu seals it and the Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets to join Mumbai Indians as the other team to win this tournament three times. This is the first time that a side has secured four straight wins over a single team in an edition of the IPL. Simply stunning effort from MS Dhoni’s side and they have romped home to a big win.
22:37 hrs IST: Two more boundaries off Kaul by Watson and Chennai Super Kings need 2 off 12 balls. It has been a horror night for Siddarth Kaul, one that he would like to forget very quickly.
22:32 hrs IST: There it is! Fourth IPL ton for Shane Watson. Sublime, brilliant and effortless. He raises his arms and roars in delight. Chennai Super Kings are closing in on the title. To add insult to injury, Rashid Khan also ends on a poor note with two boundaries. CSK need 13 off 18 balls.
22:28 hrs IST: Rayudu gets into the action as he thrashes a full ball from Bhuvneshwar over wide long off for a six. That is all from Bhuvneshwar in this IPL. It has been a splendid effort from him but unfortunately, he might end up on the losing side.
22:22 hrs IST: Another great over from Rashid Khan. Keeps it down to just one run. However, it is a bit too late one feels. Rayudu survives a LBW appeal and Sunrisers Hyderabad waste their review as the impact is outside off stump and is missing the wicket.
22:18 hrs IST: The wicket of Raina has not slowed Watson down. He nears his century with a glided four past short third man and then blasts a pull shot over deep mid wicket for his eighth six.
22:14 hrs IST: Finally, Sunrisers Hyderabad get the breakthrough. Short ball and hurrying on to Raina, he is caught in an awkward position for the pull and the ball brushes the glove. Sunrisers opt for the review and he goes for a well-made 32. However, this is small consolation as Chennai Super Kings are near the title.
22:11 hrs IST: Disastrous over for Sunrisers Hyderabad and there are glum faces in their camp. Sandeep Sharma is absolutely distraught. Watson thumps a four over extra cover and then follows up with a hat-trick of sixes, including one glorious swat over long on. He ends the over with a glided four past short third man as Sandeep leaks 27 runs in the over. Chennai Super Kings are coasting towards the title now.
22:06 hrs IST: Watson continues on his merry ways as he wallops a short ball to the deep mid wicket fence for his fourth boundary. Raina is cleverly rotating the strike. The game is slowly slipping out of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s grasp. After 12 overs, Chennai Super Kings are 104/1, needing 75 off 48. Kane Williamson needs a wicket.
22:00 hrs IST: Brilliant fifty from Watson and he gets there in style by clubbing Shakib Al Hasan over deep backward square leg. The ball stayed very low and the shot looked like it was a sweep/pull. Chennai Super Kings on course and the over is made even better with Raina creaming a flighted delivery over long on.
21:56 hrs IST: Rashid Khan bowls five good balls but he spoils the 10th over by bowling a quick ball down leg side, Raina helps it to the fine leg boundary and Chennai Super Kings now need less than 100 to chase down Sunrisers Hyderabad’s score.
21:52 hrs IST: Another terrible over from Siddarth Kaul. Watson pummels a knuckle ball over long on for his third six. This has scrambled the bowler’s mind and he loses his length, conceding a four but on two instances, Watson miscues the lofted shot that lands safely at deep extra cover. The Australian veteran is riding his luck.
21:44 hrs IST: Rashid Khan comes into the attack and concedes just four runs in his first over. The pitch has provided him turn, bounce and some assistance. Time for the time-out and Chennai Super Kings need 123 off 72 balls.
21:39 hrs IST: Terrible over from Siddarth Kaul. Watson non-chalantly flicks a full ball over deep mid wicket for his second six and survives a miscued lofted shot that lands safely at deep extra cover. However, Kaul bowls short at Raina and both times, he is dispatched to the fine leg fence. Chennai Super Kings on the charge.
21:35 hrs IST: The final over of the powerplay ends well for Chennai Super Kings. Watson slams a pull shot that sails into the deep mid wicket stands and then responds with a biffed four down the ground. Suresh Raina survives a run-out chance as Chennai Super Kings reach 35/1 after six overs.
21:29 hrs IST: Another excellent over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and he has figures of 3-1-9-0. He has swung the ball brilliantly and has bowled in the perfect areas. This spell could prove to be match-defining for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
21:24 hrs IST: That is a massive wicket. Faf du Plessis dances down the track and looks to slog a length ball on the pads from Sandeep to mid wicket, but the ball swings away and he gets a big leading edge, Sandeep takes the catch and the bowler flings the ball to the ground in disgust.
21:19 hrs IST: Bhuvneshwar bowls yet another tight over but it is spoiled slightly thanks to a sloppy bit of fielding from Deepak Hooda. Needless shy at the stumps and it is five overthrows. Bhuvneshwar and Williamson are absolutely not happy.
21:14 hrs IST: Faf du Plessis begins with a boundary off Sandeep Sharma as he caresses a full ball past the gap at extra cover for a lovely boundary. However, Sandeep pulls things back and after two overs, Chennai Super Kings are 5/0 after two overs.
21:08 hrs IST: Excellent over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Swing, seam and extra bounce and Shane Watson is absolutely clueless on how to lay bat on ball. It is a maiden over to begin with and Chennai Super Kings are already been put under pressure.
20:49 hrs IST: Carlos Brathwaite slams yet another six but in trying to repeat the dose, he miscues the lofted shot to be caught at long on. Sunrisers Hyderabad have ended on 178/6 after 20 overs, thanks to the solid knocks of 47 and 45* from Kane Williamson and Yusuf Pathan.
20:42 hrs IST: Superb bowling from Lungi Ngidi but the over is spoilt as Carlos Brathwaite clobbers a full ball over long on for his second six. Sunrisers Hyderabad are 168/5 after 19 overs. Can Yusuf Pathan get to his fifty or will Chennai Super Kings restrict them to under 180?
20:36 hrs IST: Carlos Brathwaite begins in his usual style, lofting down the ground for a massive six. Dwayne Bravo tries to keep the runs down but in the end, he concedes 16 runs in the over. Brathwaite’s miscued lofted shot lands safely at long on and Yusuf adds insult to injury with a thumping lofted shot to long on. Sunrisers Hyderabad are 160/5 after 18 overs. Can they reach 190?
20:31 hrs IST: Another wicket falls. Yusuf Pathan, at the other end, is batting like an absolute dream as he lofts Lungi Ngidi over long on for a big six. However, Deepak Hooda (3) miscues the lofted slog and is caught at deep square leg. Sunrisers Hyderabad are losing their way slightly in the death overs.
20:23 hrs IST: Oh dear, that is such a bad way to go. Dwayne Bravo bowls a full toss outside off, Shakib’s eyes light up and he blasts it to extra cover, but unfortunately, he finds Suresh Raina and he takes the catch. Although he injures himself slightly, this is another vital wicket for Chennai Super Kings.
20:18 hrs IST: Yusuf! Glorious! Karn Sharma bowls a full and wide ball outside off and Yusuf hammers the lofted drive over the extra cover fence. Both Yusuf and Shakib need to hang in if Sunrisers Hyderabad are to reach 180.
20:16 hrs IST: Yusuf Pathan starts brilliantly as he wallops a short ball to the deep point fence. Perhaps, this is the time for Yusuf to steal the show and show that he can be back to his glorious best.
20:09 hrs IST: Yusuf Pathan gets going with a boundary to the third man fence. He employed the late cut brilliantly and the veteran shows he can play the touch game as well, rather than slam-bang, thank you madam cricket.
20:06 hrs IST: Oh dear, Williamson will not get to a fifty. Karn Sharma gets the vital wicket and Chennai Super Kings roar back in the contest. The skipper charges down the track looking to slam it past cover but Karn darts a full and quick ball wide outside off and MS Dhoni effects an easy stumping. Kane Williamson st Dhoni b Karn Sharma 47 (36).
20:05 hrs IST: Williamson continues to play like a dream. He drills a full ball from Bravo to the deep extra cover fence and then follows it up with a pull shot to the deep mid wicket fence. He is nearing a fifty.
20:00 hrs IST: Excellent over for Sunrisers Hyderabad as both Williamson and Shakib blaze away. The Sunrisers skipper gets an outside edge to a delivery that spins away but it evades Lungi Ngidi at short third man. Shakib, on the other hand, mauls an 80-meter six over widish long on and then creams a full ball to the wide long on fence as Jadeja concedes 17 runs in his second over.
19:55 hrs IST: Shakib Al Hasan starts confidently with a boundary past short third man but Deepak Chahar responds with a wonderful over where he troubled Williamson with his slow bouncers. After 10 overs, Sunrisers Hyderabad are 73/2. They will be ideally gunning for a score in excess of 170 to challenge Chennai Super Kings and hope their bowling clicks. Chahar, meanwhile, finishes his spell with figures of 4-0-25-0.
19:48 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja breaks this dangerous stand. Flatter ball drifting in on middle and leg stump, Dhawan goes for the almighty slog sweep over deep mid wicket but misses it and the ball crashes into middle stump. Jadeja, who has not contributed much in the tournament, strikes a vital blow in the final. Shikhar Dhawan b Jadeja 26 (25).
19:42 hrs IST: Dwayne Bravo bowls four superb deliveries but Williamson shows who is the real boss at the Wankhede. Bravo bowls a full, slow ball but Williamson skips down the track to wallop it to deep extra cover. The last ball of the over is a full toss which Williamson moves to the off side and scoops it over fine leg for his second six.
19:37 hrs IST: Dhawan is looking in great touch here. Williamson recognises that and rotates the strike cleverly. The left-hander pounces on a short ball from Karn Sharma and hammers the pull shot to the deep backward square leg fence. After seven overs, Sunrisers Hyderabad have reached 51/1.
19:32 hrs IST: Shikhar Dhawan grows in confidence as he clobbers a full ball from Shardul Thakur over long on for a mighty six. That is vintage Gabbar for you. After the end of the powerplay, Sunrisers Hyderabad are 42/1. Decent start but Chennai Super Kings have bowled really well.
19:26 hrs IST: Williamson finally gets going and it is aided by two poor deliveries from Deepak Chahar. The first is a short ball from Chahar and Williamson top-edges the pull shot over long leg. The second is a short ball that sits up to be pulled and the Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper muscles the pull to the deep mid wicket fence. After five overs, Sunrisers Hyderabad are 30/1. Can they end the powerplay confidently?
19:21 hrs IST: A maiden over from Lungi Ngidi. Williamson is frustrated as he looks to find the gaps but he finds the fielder every single time. This is an excellent start from the Chennai Super Kings bowlers.
19:17 hrs IST: Another good over from Deepak Chahar. Just three runs conceded. The line, length were perfect and did not give either Shikhar Dhawan or Kane Williamson any room to work with. After three overs, Sunrisers Hyderabad are 17/1
19:11 hrs IST: Sunrisers Hyderabad have gifted a wicket to Chennai Super Kings. Great start for the Men in Yellow. Short of a length ball on the pads, Goswami tucks it to backward square leg and looks for a second, is run-out due to a good throw from Karn Sharma. After two overs, Sunrisers Hyderabad are 14/1
19:05 hrs IST: Deepak Chahar bowls the first over and starts with a no-ball. However, the free hit is not capitalised and Sunrisers Hyderabad openers Shikhar Dhawan, Shreevats Goswami only manage singles. After the end of the first over, SRH are 6/0. MS Dhoni has set good fields.
18:31 hrs IST: Chennai Super Kings have opted to bowl against Sunrisers Hyderabad and MS Dhoni’s side have made one change, with Karn Sharma replacing Harbhajan Singh. Kane Williamson’s side have made two changes, with Sandeep Sharma replacing Khaleel Ahmed and Shreevats Goswami replacing Wriddhiman Saha. Here are the playing XIs of both sides
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Shikhar Dhawan, Shreevats Goswami(w), Kane Williamson(c), Shakib Al Hasan, Deepak Hooda, Yusuf Pathan, Carlos Brathwaite, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma
Chennai Super Kings: Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni(w/c), Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Karn Sharma, Shardul Thakur, Lungi Ngidi
18:22 hrs IST: Sunrisers lost four consecutive games before they secured a victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in the second Qualifier. Have they regained the momentum which suffered a dip towards the end stages or will their bogey against Chennai Super Kings continue?
18:10 hrs IST: For Chennai Super Kings, the 2018 IPL final offers them one more chance to win IPL title No.3. They have been the bridesmaid four times in this tournament, coming out second best in 2008, 2012,2013 and in the 2015 editions. On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad will be aiming to repeat their 2016 heroics.
18:00 hrs IST: This will be a contest between the best bowling side and the best batting side of the tournament. Chennai Super Kings’ batting has been simply powerful with the top order in fine form while Kane Williamson’s side have Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul as their key bowlers. However, their fortunes revolve around Rashid Khan who has been outstanding. In the previous game between the two sides at the Wankhede, Rashid almost made the difference.
17:46 hrs IST: This is the fourth encounter between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2018. MS Dhoni’s side have won all three encounters, including the first Qualifier by two wickets which forced Kane Williamson’s side to take a circular route via Kolkata to reach the final in Mumbai.
17:39 hrs IST: The closing ceremony will be hosted by Ranbir Kapoor and Aparshakti Khurana while the entire Bollywood star cast of Race 3, Kriti Sanon and Jacqueline Fernandez will provide the Wankhede stadium plenty of glamour.
17:35 hrs IST: A warm welcome to the final of the 2018 Indian Premier League. After 59 games and 1000 miles of air travel, the final game of the IPL will feature Chennai Super Kings taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede stadium. However, before the action, there will be a glamorous closing ceremony where Bollywood’s stars will be out in full flow.
MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings will be aiming to cap a fairytale return to competition after the ignominy of a two-year suspension while Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad will be gunning for their second title, having overcome the setback of losing talismanic captain, David Warner, before the IPL began.
CSK came in with bruised ego and have battered opponents into submission in their ruthless march to the final, their seventh in nine editions. After a dream start, SRH have stuttered and have just about got in the position to challenge CSK for the crown.
Some of the biggest names in the game will line-up. However, all eyes will be on Afghanistan sensation Rashid Khan following Friday’s heroics in the playoff against Kolkata Knight Riders.
He will be the man CSK need to take care of if they want to lay their hands on the IPL trophy for the third time. In Friday’s knock-out game, the Afghanistan leg-spinner scored 34 not out off 10 balls, took three wickets and two catches, and effected a run-out, single-handedly silencing the Eden Gardens crowd.
