Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene has come up with a bold prediction for the blockbuster Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and hosts India. After thrashing West Indies and South Africa at home, Australia have set sights on conquering India in the second edition of the ICC World Test Championship. Table-toppers in the ICC World Test Championship, visitors Australia will meet second-placed India in the series opener of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Thursday.
Rivals India and Australia are currently occupying the top two spots on the ICC Men’s Test Rankings. India and Australia are also leading the race to qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship which will take place in June. In conversation with popular sports presenter Sanjana Ganesan, former Sri Lanka skipper Jayawardene has revealed his prediction for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia.
Sharing his views ahead of the 1st Test between the two teams, Jayawardena has backed Australia to end its series drought in India. Jayawardene has predicted a 'tough' 2-1 series win for the Pat Cummins-led side in India. “I think it's always going to be a great series. I think Indian conditions and how the Australian batsmen tackle that, they do have a really good bowling unit and how do the Indian batsmen tackle that … it depends on how each team starts the series and who's got that momentum. But it will be fascinating. It's difficult to predict, but being a Sri Lankan, I’m hoping that Australia can go all the way. Probably a 2-1 win for Australia, but it's going to be a tough one,” Jayawardena told ICC.
The visitors will be without pace ace Josh Hazlewood, who is set to miss the 1st Test against India. Veteran pacer Mitchell Starc is also ruled out of the series opener with an injury. Australia last won a Test series on Indian soil back in 2004. The Men from Down Under will play the series opener against hosts India in Nagpur at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium on Thursday.
