Devon Smith

A left-handed opener from the island of Grenada, Devon Smith has had a rather ‘stop-start’ international career. Known for not having the most perfect technique, this Caribbean cricketer has made his way to the international circuit by way of scoring a flurry of domestic runs. His career has been as rocky as the Alps with numerous peaks and troughs.

Smith’s prowess with the bat caught the eye of the national selectors when he managed to rake up 750 runs for the Windward Islands in the 2001-02 Busta Cup. He was made a part of the 2002 West Indies squad for the tour of India but could not manage to get a game. His Test debut came against the toughest opposition at the time, Australia. He was able to overcome the challenge and scored a rapid 62. Smith’s inability to score much in the next Test cost him his place in the squad.

The year 2004 was better for the left hander as he made his way back to the West Indian side and scored over a thousand runs in first-class cricket. Smith scored his maiden Test century in the game against England. As destiny was to have it, a thumb injury forced Smith out of the squad and it broke his flow. A poor show in the 2005 Test against Australia kept him out of the side for a good 2 years. Smith returned to play for the West Indies in 2007 and was chosen for the World Cup; however, a horrid series against Zimbabwe in the same year did not allow him to cement his place. He did not fare too well in the tour against England in 2009 and managed to score just one half century. He was then included in the side for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, where he notched his maiden ODI hundred.
