Joel Davies

Joel Davies, the younger brother of fellow New South Wales and Sydney Sixers batter Oliver Davies, came through the New South Wales pathway as a talented left-handed batter and left-arm orthodox spinner, while also developing a reputation as an outstanding fielder. He captained NSW Metro to the 2022 Australian Under-19 Championships after scoring 458 runs across six matches, which earned him recognition at the national Under-19 level. His performances subsequently led to a move into the Big Bash League, where he made his T20 debut for Sydney Thunder against Perth Scorchers in 2023.

Davies switched to Sydney Sixers ahead of the 2023-24 BBL season, but it was the 2025-26 campaign that truly marked his breakthrough. He made a significant impact with both bat and ball, scoring 137 runs at a strike rate of 159.30 and claiming 14 wickets at an economy of 6.23. His best bowling figures of 3/24 came during a campaign in which he became a key part of the Sixers' run to the BBL final, while his match-winning performance in the Challenger against Hobart Hurricanes further underlined his growing influence.

The next major step came in December 2025 when Davies made his first-class debut for New South Wales against Queensland at the SCG. He marked the occasion with an unbeaten 52, providing an early indication of his potential in the longer format. His domestic progress continued alongside another breakthrough BBL campaign with the Sixers, where he became an increasingly important part of their side and helped them reach the final.

Davies made his List A debut for New South Wales in 2026, adding another format to his growing domestic experience. His all-round skill set and consistency across the BBL and Sheffield Shield had also brought him firmly into the national selectors' thinking, and in June 2026 he received his maiden call-up to Australia's T20I squad for the Bangladesh tour.

He made his T20I debut against Bangladesh and made an immediate impact with the ball, returning 3/17 as Australia secured a four-wicket victory. Davies featured throughout the series, giving the selectors a closer look at an all-rounder capable of offering flexibility in the middle order and with the ball.

His emergence continued later in 2026 when he was included in Australia's ODI squad for the tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa. The call-up represented another step in his development towards becoming a multi-format international, with his left-handed batting and left-arm spin giving Australia another versatile option as they build towards the 2027 World Cup.
