Having bowled Australia out for 216 in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Indian U-19 cricket team made light work of a moderate total as Manjot Kalra saw them home in style. (IND v AUS scorecard)

The opener struck an unbeaten 101 from 102 balls with eight fours and three sixes as Dravid’s men reached their target with more than 11 overs to spare.

The title is India’s first since 2012, having been beaten in the final by the West Indies two years ago, and the head coach hopes this success is the first of many for this crop of players.

“I’m really proud of the boys and the effort they put in,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier for them.

“Hopefully it’s a memory they cherish for a long, long time, but hopefully not the lasting memory and they have many more great moments and bigger things in future.

“It’s a bit embarrassing at times because I tend to get a lot of attention and focus, but it is really about the support staff and the quality of people that we’ve had.”

“I don’t want to mention names but everyone in the support staff has put in a great effort. We do the best for the kids.”

“I enjoyed it a lot,” added man of the match Kalra. “The conditions were good. Not a difficult wicket, it was flat and good to bat on. It’s been a great environment within the team and I’ve enjoyed that.”
