Rishabh Pant lauds Prithvi Shaw after Delhi Daredevils’ win over Rajasthan Royals

It has taken Rishabh Pant just two blistering knocks to not only race to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 scorers’ list but also spark the discussion whether he merits a permanent place in the Indian cricket team in the two shorter formats. (HIGHLIGHTS)

Moulded in the Delhi school of flamboyance, Pant showed once again on Wednesday why he is the most discussed Delhi Daredevils cricketer despite the assuring brilliance of Shreyas Iyer and the young Prithvi Shaw. He may not be as consistent as Iyer but the devastating capability of running away with the game in the matter of few overs makes Pant one of the most feared batsmen currently playing in the IPL. Rajasthan Royals bowlers were shown their place with a 29-ball 69 on Wednesday but Pant is not ready to jump the gun and think about a prospective international future. “I’m not thinking anything of that (getting into the India team) right now. I’m just trying to do well for the team, that’s all,” said Pant after Delhi Daredevils’ four-run win against the Royals.

The win has allowed Delhi to stay alive in the league and Pant attributes it to the realisation of the mistakes they have committed in the past. “Actually we were batting brilliantly in all the matches but small mistakes came in our way. Now we are making sure that doesn’t happen and we win all our matches,” he said.

What seems to have influenced Pant’s exuberant form is the platform given by Shaw’s opening blasts and he was effusive in the praise of the U-19 World Cup winning captain. “He was brilliant from day one. Just that he was not getting a chance. He was practising very well though. And when he got a chance he capitalised on it,” said Pant.

As far as his display is concerned, Pant says he is given no particular brief while batting. “Everyone has a different role in the team. They (Shaw and Iyer) are playing up the order so they have to maintain the run rate. They are doing a pretty good job. And after that I’m coming in and doing my job. There is no such brief actually. Everyone is just taking the responsibility for the team,” he said.

Despite their strong batting show, Delhi ultimately were bailed out by the skilful bowling of Trent Boult in the last over after Jos Buttler set up RR’s chase with a 26-ball 67. Pant however didn’t want to take too much cognisance of that since he feels the flat wickets are making matches like these look so close. “The wickets are pretty good for batting. Mahi bhai played an exceptional knock last time. That’s part and parcel of the game. We are just taking the positives,” he said.
