Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia denied reports on Friday that chief minister Arvind Kejriwal removed Ram Jethmalani as his lawyer in the defamation case filed by Union minister Arun Jaitley.
“Those running such news should check their sources,” Sisodia said at a press conference on Friday.
In December 2016, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia had asked the finance department of Delhi government to release the appearance fee of Rs 3 crore to Jethmalani. However, the law department raised concerns and the matter was sent to Delhi L-G Ani Baijal for approval.
But before the approval could come through, Jethmalani told the reporters in April that he would be happy to appear for Kejriwal free of cost if he could not afford to pay.
Sisodia had said that the government should be bearing the cost as the defamation case is related to the ‘inquiry initiated by the state government against the alleged corruption in Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA).
He said the matter of Jethmalani’s fee was being raked up to divert attention from the issue of “faulty” EVMs before the municipal election in Delhi.
