The semi-decomposed body of a 23-year-old woman, who went missing on Monday along with her six-month-old daughter, was found in Najafgarh drain in southwest Delhi on Wednesday morning, police said.

Police said the toddler is untraceable and they do not know whether she is dead or alive. Teams have been formed to trace the missing child. No case was registered in connection with the incident. Initial police inquiry indicated suicide but they are waiting for the autopsy report to rule out foul play.

“No visible injury marks were found on the woman’s body. Prime facie, it appears that she committed suicide. However, we are not ruling out the possibility that she was murdered and her body was thrown into the drain. The autopsy report is crucial,” said deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse.

The DCP said the woman and her husband had marital issues. The local sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) has been requested to conduct a probe since the woman died within seven years of her marriage.

The woman, Sonika, lived with her husband Pawan Singh and daughter in a rented house in Sangam Vihar near Najafgarh. On Tuesday, Singh filed a missing complaint in which he said his wife and daughter were untraceable since Monday morning.

On Wednesday around 7.30 am, a passerby saw a woman’s body floating in Najafgarh drain. He informed the police control room. The body was sent to Rao Tula Ram Hospital’s mortuary for autopsy.

The deceased was identified as Sonika and her husband claimed the body. Singh works with a private company in Dwarka Sector-16. The two got married in January 2015. Sonkia was a housewife. The family originally belongs to Garhwal in Uttarakhand.
