Police on Thursday night arrested a 24-year-old ragpicker for allegedly raping a minor girl in south Delhi’s Rangpuri on Wednesday.
Police zeroed in on the accused by using the description given by the victim in her statement. The man was arrested after the police came to know that a similar-looking man had attempted kidnapping another girl from the neighbourhood.
The accused has been identified as one Prakash, a homeless man who belongs to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. The nine-year-old girl was raped on Wednesday night after she stepped out of her shanty in Rangpuri to go to a public toilet nearby.
The matter came to light when some passersby found the girl in a semiconscious state and alerted her family, who in turn informed the police. The victim had told cops that the suspect was tall and of dark complexion.
A PCR call was made around 2am after the parents of the girl saw her private parts bleeding, following which a medical examination on Thursday morning confirmed sexual assault.
Primary probe revealed that a similar-looking man had attempted kidnapping another girl from the neighbourhood earlier and an FIR regarding the case was registered in that case also. The accused then had, however, managed to flee.
Joint commissioner of police (New Delhi), Ajay Chaudhry said, that police teams scanned all possible suspects in the area based on the description given by the girl in her statement.
“After scanning through more than 25 suspects, we zeroed in on a ragpicker who often visited the area and is a vagabond. He was detained and interrogated after which he confessed to having committed the rape as well as the kidnapping attempt,” he said.
Police said that the condition of the girl, who had sustained injuries in her private parts and had to be admitted to AIIMS Trauma centre, was stated to be stable by doctors on Thursday night.
Locals and family members of the victim on Friday expressed outrage over the incident and blocked the road near Vasant Kunj, affecting peak hour traffic and leading to snarls. Additional traffic policemen had to be deployed in the area to clear the snarls.
