A 20-year-old woman was allegedly punched, and her mobile phone was snatched by two motorcycle-borne assailants in Karol Bagh on Wednesday morning, police said.
While the woman chased the bikers for a few metres, the motorcycle lost balance and the men fell on the road leading to the arrest of one.The second accused is still at large, the police added.
According to police, the UPSC aspirant was on her way to her coaching classes in a cycle rickshaw when the assailants took away her mobile phone and tried to flee. The woman refused to speak to Hindustan Times but her friend, Manish Damachya, alleged that the woman was punched with a lot of force.
“It was around 8am. She was on her way to class at her usual time. When she reached near the coaching centre on Pusa Road, two young men came on a black and white motorcycle from behind. The pillion rider punched her and as she lost control, they snatched her mobile phone and fled,” said Damachya.
“The woman got down from the rickshaw and yelled at them as she ran after the bikers,” said Chhote Lal who works as a guard in the neighbourhood.
The woman was helped by a car driver passing by who also chased the bikers. She was also offered lift by an auto rickshaw driver, Lal added.
“They all followed the bikers who were speeding away. The snatchers ran out of luck as their bike slipped and they fell on the road. Passersby gathered around them,” said Mukesh, another eyewitness who works at a motor spare parts shop close by.
According to her statement, one accused man fled the spot while the other was injured by the fall. He was allegedly thrashed by the people. The woman reached the spot where the men fell and in her presence the pockets of the man were checked by a person in the crowd.
She recovered her phone from the man, and also found an iPhone in his possession. Someone from the crowd made a call to the police control room and a PCR van took the man to a hospital, her statement added.
The man has been identified as Vinay, a resident of Paharganj. During interrogation, he revealed that the second phone found in his possession was also snatched by him and his accomplice from Tilak Nagar the same morning, police said.
“We have registered a case of robbery and arrested Vinay. Efforts are on to arrest the other accused,” said deputy commissioner of police (central) MS Randhawa.
