NEW DELHI: Two days after an angry mob, allegedly incited by rumours, thrashed a 32-year-old man to death in northeast Delhi’s Khajoori Khas area, police on Sunday arrested two persons in connection with the case.

Deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Ajit Kumar Singla said the roles of Mohammad Shahid and Mohammad Ishtiaq, both residents of Khajoori Khas, were established in their probe.
A senior police officer privy to the probe said Shahid and Ishtiaq overpowered the man when he entered a house in E-block to save his life after locals suspected him to be a kidnapper.
“The two overpowered him, tied his limbs and dragged him out of the house in the lane where he was subjected to thrashing. Instead of calling the police and handing over the suspect to them, the two incited the crowd for the mob justice,” said the officer. He said they were yet to identify the victim.
On Friday afternoon, a rumour spread in E-block that the man was trying to kidnap a four-year-old girl with the help of his friend. The girl had allegedly told her mother that the man had held her hand. Even as the mother confronted the man, the mob lynched him.
“Nobody in the mob had seen him attempting to kidnap a girl child, but they simply trusted the rumour and mercilessly killed him,” said a police officer.
A CCTV footage showed cops removing the young man’s body from the crime scene on a cart.
