Central Delhi to get centralised sewage treatment plants soon
NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council will soon have 10 decentralised sewage treatment plants to treat water faster and use it for horticulture. These sewage plants will be connected to all parks maintained by the council.
According to a senior official, the tendering process for these STPs, with a total capacity of 3MLD, is nearly over, with evaluation on for the bids received. The work will be awarded soon.
“The NDMC has decided to construct decentralised sewage treatment plants on a public-private-partnership model at 10 locations in various areas of central Delhi. The decision was taken at a council meeting chaired by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal,” said a senior council official.
“In March it was decided to construct these smaller sewage treatment plants in NDMC area at 10 locations with the different capacity of treating sewerage water. We have already invited reputed firms for selection as concessioner and developers to develop 100 to 500 KLD capacity sewage treatment plants. They will also be responsible for its operation and maintenance for 12 years,” the official added.
Recently, the council identified 12 schools in its area where decentralised sewage treatment plants (of different sizes, depending on available areas) would be setup.
The council is working with the NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) to implement this plan.
According to NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar, , the only option left with the council is to go for small decentralised STPs in its area, considering lack of space.
The council has taken up a plantation drive with a target to plant two lakh saplings, in an attempt to make Central Delhi greener.
