NEW DELHI: Five persons, including a woman, barged inside the house of a businessman, held his daughter and wife at gunpoint and robbed jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash on Sunday. The incident was reported from west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar area.

According to the police, Vijender Singh, who runs a construction business, was not at home at the time of the incident. His wife, Jyoti, told the police that she was at home with her daughter and mother-in-law, Savitri, when one man and a woman rang the doorbell and introduced themselves as government employees conducting a census. The duo even showed her their identity cards and gained entry into the house. After entering the house, the woman, asked Jyoti for a glass of water and as soon as she turned her back, the man held Jyoti’s daughter at gunpoint.

In a statement given to the police, Jyoti said that three more armed men, who were waiting outside, barged in. They locked the door from the inside and held her mother-in-law and her daughter hostage. “She stated that the men then ransacked the house completely and checked all almirahs for cash and jewellery. They asked for the locker keys and she handed them over to save her daughter’s life. The men reportedly put the cash and jewellery in a bag and then left the house,” an investigator said. He added, “While leaving the house, the men also took with them the digital video recorder of the CCTV camera.”

After the robbers left, Jyoti untied her daughter and her mother-in-law and immediately informed the police.

A case has been registered and a probe launched.
