Five of the arrested were involved in the robbery, while the others bought the stolen copper cables from them, police said. The arrested men, who are aged between 21 and 30, were being led by Raj Kumar, who had come to Delhi a few months ago.
Raj told the police that the need for a job had brought him to Delhi. Some of his friends here were working as electricians. “His friends would steal copper cables from buildings that were under construction and sell them to Rashid, a scrap dealer. He began inducing them to steal copper cables in larger quantities,” Ajay Chaudhry, the additional commissioner of police (southeast), added.
“Closed-circuit TV footage showed the faces of some of the robbers. Police informers were shown the images and they helped in identifying the culprits,” he said.
Manoj Kumar, one of those allegedly involved in the robbery, was arrested from Jaitpur, following which others were arrested.
It was in Manoj’s Qualis that the stolen cables had been transport. A day before the incident, two of the arrested had done a recce of the area. The robbers sold the copper cables to Rashid and others for Rs 2.57 lakh and divided the amount among themselves. They have admitted their involvement in cases of thievery in Greater Kailash and Gurgaon.
