Ghaziabad police said these 10 personnel of Delhi Crime branch (anti-extortion cell) allegedly picked up a man to enquire about some Pakistani currency and RDX. A day following his arrest, his wife committed suicide.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Akhil Kumar said the Delhi policemen had picked up Afsar Khan alias Munna (50) from his house in Loni on April 14 around 10.30 p.m. following a tip off from an informer.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Khan said, “They misbehaved with my family and asked me about the RDX and Pakistani currency. I had no information about the things they were asking me. Later, they took me in a car to some unknown location. When I asked, they said they were from RK Puram Police Station. They made me sign several written and blank documents. They also threatened to arrest my family members.”

Khan’s wife Nafeesa Begum (40) committed suicide by hanging herself the day after at her house at Dabur Talab, near Sitara Masjid.

“My mother committed suicide out of fear and shame,” Arshad Khan’s son said. Khan was released on the afternoon of April 15 and four policemen dropped him off at Loni police station.

The suicide by Khan’s wife and his illegal-custody created a furore. Their family and angry neighbours lodged a complaint and an FIR was registered at Loni police station.

“Apart from this, my wife also lodged two complaints the same night I was picked up, at Loni police station,” Afsar Khan told HT.

“We have registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC against these policemen and their informer. Further investigations are on but no arrests have been made in this connection so far,” SSP Akhil Kumar said.

Khan added that the informer continues to threaten his family.

Senior Delhi Police officers said they are yet to receive any kind of official intimation from Ghaziabad Police.

“We will look into the matter when the Ghaziabad Police approaches us. We will duly investigate the matter and see if the allegations against the 10 police personnel are true,” he said.
