A 61-year-old advocate was arrested for raping his client repeatedly for over two years, reportedly as punishment for a bounced payment cheque, in northwest Delhi, police said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Bhupender Singh, who stays in Rani Bagh area, had been hired by his 35-year-old victim to represent her in a case of cheating, that she had filed against her own husband, around seven years ago.
“The victim, who too is a resident of Rani Bagh, approached us on May 10 with a complaint stating that Singh had, apart from threatening her with dire consequences, continuously raped her throughout her association with him between 2004 and 2006,” said Meenu Chaudhary, DCP (northwest).
According to police, the victim, who is a homemaker, had approached Singh at his chamber in north Delhi’s Tis Hazari District Courts complex in early 2004. The two had decided on a certain fee for Singh’s services which was to be reimbursed to him by means of a cheque. Singh, according to the police, got free rein to sexually exploit his client when, in late 2006, the cheque that he received from her bounced at the bank.
“He began calling her, first to his chambers, and later to his residence, on the pretext of lowering the fee and forced her into performing sexual favours for him. When she resisted, he threatened her with dire consequences and even filed a case of contempt against her,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
The victim, who chose to remain silent about the abuse meted out to her for years, chose to break her silence when Singh, who claimed that he was impotent when a police team landed at his doorstep on Thursday morning, started threatening her again recently.
“We have arrested Singh and further investigations into the matter are underway,” DCP Chaudhary added.
