Only five days remain for the deadline of July 31 that the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) gave for the park and ride facility at Safdarjung Airport. But as per its June status report, only 25 per cent work was completed.

The civic body, which is constructing the parking facility, has now said the parking area will be ready by September end.

A senior NDMC official said, “A team of the NDMC council members with Chief Secretary of Delhi had inspected the park and ride facility 10 days ago. The project is 85 per cent completed. We will complete it before Games.”

The Safdarjung airport will be used to park vehicles of VIPs, CWG organising committee members and buses of sports players. The airport, through a dedicated route, will be directly connected to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, one of the main venues for the Commonwealth Games.

Under the project, a parking area of 1.7 lakh square meters is being constructed within the airport to accommodate 3,000 cars, 6,000 two wheelers and 450 buses.

Temporary utility structures such as public information centres, crew waiting areas, security chambers and public conveniences are to come up at the airport for the park and ride facility.

Claiming that the work would be completed by the Games, the civic agency has now given different completion dates for various components of the project. For this delay the official blamed various “site issues” and said the agency cannot be held responsible.

“There are a number of issues which one gets to know only when the construction work starts. As we started the work, we found many problems and had to deal with them. One of the major reasons for delay was that Games related work started at several sites at the same time. We faced acute shortage of labourers, which also resulted in the delay,” said the senior NDMC official.

Considering security issues during the Games, the NDMC would also install CCTVs across the parking area.
