Criticising the rampant corruption and "inaction" of the government, more than 2,000 people, including college students from Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University, gathered at the Ramlila Grounds and marched to Jantar Mantar.
"There is no end to scams this year. New scams are tumbling out of the closet every other day. This is totally unacceptable. The government needs to act on the charges soon," said Rohit Mahajan, a student of JNU.
The police resorted to lathicharge after the activists broke the barricades at Parliament Street.
"Five hundred activists were detained as a preventive measure and were released after 15 minutes. No case has been registered against them," said KC Dwivedi, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi).
A delegation of the members of ABVP met the President later and asked her to take action against the government.
