Auto, taxi rides get expensive in Delhi

Faced with perpetual demands from auto and taxi drivers, the Delhi government has decided to hike fares by up to 30%. The new rates will come into effect from Thursday.

Faced with perpetual demands from auto and taxi drivers, the Delhi government has decided to hike fares by up to 30%. The new rates will come into effect from Thursday.

The minimum amount to board an auto for two kilometres has been increased from Rs. 19 to Rs. 25. For every subsequent km, you will have to pay Rs. 8, up from Rs. 6.5.

This means travelling from Connaught Place to AIIMS - a 10km distance - will now cost Rs. 89 instead of Rs. 71.

For taxis, the minimum boarding rate for the first km has been hiked from Rs. 20 to Rs. 25.

For every subsequent km, the rate is up from Rs. 11 to Rs. 14 for non-air-conditioned taxis and from Rs. 13 to Rs. 16 for AC taxis.

The waiting charge of Rs. 30 per hour for autos and taxis remains unchanged.

Fares were last hiked in June 2010.

Since then, the price for compressed natural gas (CNG) in the city has gone up 40%, leading to protests from drivers who wanted a fare revision.
