Baalu, however, maintained that he met Gandhi to convey Karunanidhi's well wishes to her after her return from the US post-surgery.

"It is a great opportunity to receive the blessings of a senior leader like Karunanidhi," Baalu quoted Gandhi as saying. He said no politics was discussed at the meeting.

DMK sources said, a few days ago, Karunanidhi had sent a missive to Gandhi through a special messenger, pointing out that Kanimozhi had been in jail for more than 120 days and her plea was getting delayed for "one reason or another" and a political motive could not be ruled out.

Baalu's meeting with Gandhi came after the DMK decided to go it alone in Tamil Nadu civic polls to be held next month, surprising the Congress. The DMK had also opposed the recent hike in oil prices and Union minister M K Alagiri staying away from a grouo of ministers (GoM) meet to consider a hike in price of LPG cylinder. DMK MPs are expected to mount pressure on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh once he returns from abroad end of this month to ensure that Kanimozhi is let out on bail.

Kanimozhi has been lodged in Tihar jail since May 20 following rejection of her bail plea by the special judge.

Kanimozhi approached the court for bail a day after the court failed to adhere to its self-imposed deadline of September 15 to frame charges.
