“Her chest infection has cleared and her breathing rate has stabilised. So, we removed the ventilator at 11 in the morning. We are closely monitoring her condition. She is still critical but stable,” said a doctor at the Trauma Centre.

The culture report of the baby, which is conducted on a daily basis, has also shown no infection in her blood. “It is a good sign that the infection levels have gone down significantly. Now, we can think of performing the impending surgery,” said the doctor.

After the baby developed infection in the brain and fluid started accumulating, doctors had to perform two life-saving surgeries to drain out the fluid. Another surgery to create a permanent passage within her stomach using a plastic pipe for the fluid to come out was put on hold after the baby developed infection in her lungs and blood.

The baby was brought to AIIMS with severe head injuries, broken arms, bite marks over the body and cheeks branded with hot iron on January 18 by a teenager claiming to be her mother.
