On February 12 this year, a Class VIII student of La Martiniere, a reputed Kolkata school, committed suicide after allegedly being tortured mentally and physically by his teachers.

Thursday’s incident took place at Mother Teresa Public School in Preet Vihar. The student, Sahil, reached his classroom late because his music teacher stopped him to talk to him about a competition, Sahil’s mother Sangeeta told HT.

“The teacher — B. Sudha — screamed at him before beating him up in front of his classmates,” I.B Rani, additional DCP (east) said. Fearing his classmates would mock him, Sahil jumped from the balcony.

“His legs have been fractured,” Rani said.

Despite repeated attempts, the school administration could not be reached for comment.
