Capital gain: 200% raise for Delhi MLAs

Delhi assembly's monsoon session is likely to end on a high for members across parties. The Centre has approved 200% salary hike for assembly members - to Rs 84,000 a month from Rs 28,000 a month.
The House would take up the proposal on Monday - the last day of the session - and would implement it after getting the MLAs' nod, said a senior Delhi government official, who refused to be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The biggest benefit has come in the form of hike in daily allowance.
The MLAs are paid Rs 500 a day when the House is in session. After the revision, an MLA will get Rs 1,000 a day for 365 days a year throughout the five-year term. Simply put, from around Rs 20,000 a year, the allowance will shoot to Rs 3.65 lakh annually.
MLAs will now get a basic salary of Rs 12,000, constituency allowance of Rs 18,000, Rs 12,000 towards phone, water and electricity Rs 6,000 and Rs 6,000 as conveyance charge.
While their other perks will be the same, the revised basic salary of the seven Delhi ministers will be Rs 20,000.
The Centre's nod came a few days after the governments of West Bengal and Jharkhand substantially increased the salaries of their MLAs.
Unlike other states, the salary changes for Delhi MLAs - 70 of them - have to be approved by the Union home ministry. The last time the salary was revised was in 2007.
The Centre also agreed to increase the MLAs' yearly travel allowance to Rs 50,000 from Rs 35,000. It, however, rejected the demand for free travel on the Delhi Metro.
A proposal sent by the Delhi cabinet in August 2010 had sought 300% salary hike. The note cited inflation and increased cost of living as reasons for seeking the increase.
The Centre shot down the proposal, arguing even the Members of Parliament were not paid that kind of salary.
