Security agencies in the two cities have been on high alert since Monday. Searches are being carried out in some specific areas.

In Delhi too, police has stepped up vigil and posted quick reaction teams in the New Delhi area.

Besides, additional forces have been deployed in all sensitive and crowded places, including markets, religious places, bus and railway stations in the two cities.

“According to the information, the terrorists are somewhere in the two cities. We don’t know where they entered the country from but the available intelligence does point to their continued presence,” a government official said.

Mumbai and Ahmedabad had faced several terrorist attacks in the past including the November 26, 2008 strike in the commercial capital and September 25, 2002 attack on the Akshardham temple in the Gujarat capital. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi routinely figures high on the Lashkar’s target list.
