North Delhiites won’t need to sweat it out for a Blueline ride this summer. The air-conditioned Delhi Metro has arrived at their doorstep.

The Vishwavidyalaya-Jehangirpuri section opens to public today, benefitting residents of Model Town, Mukherjee Nagar, Maurice Nagar, Kingsway Camp, Derawal Nagar, Ashok Vihar and Shalimar Bagh.

But students, who mostly take up paying guest accommodation in areas like Model Town, Derawal Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar and Outram Lines, would benefit the most. So far, they have depended upon cycle rickshaws to reach the North Campus.

“I spend Rs 40 everyday just to reach my college in Delhi University. But with the Metro coming to Outram Lines, I will save Rs 28 each day,” said Songeeta Das, a student of Miranda House.

Earlier, residents of these localities relied on buses and the Vishwavidyalaya Metro station to commute in the city.

People feel the route extension would save traders and students both time and money.

“I live in Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar and travel to Chandni Chowk for business every day. Earlier, I used to travel by bus till Delhi University and board the Metro from there. But now I can go directly from GTB Nagar,” said JS Wadia, a resident of GTB Nagar.

The Metro extension is expected to draw 1.5 lakh commuters away from the roads. In all, 350 buses ply along this line covering 73 routes.
