Be prepared to get confused with different parking charges being imposed in different parts of the Capital. The three municipal corporations that operate close to 300 parking sites in the city may soon start imposing separate parking fees starting from Rs. 10 to Rs. 50 per car.

So while in Karol Bagh you may pay Rs. 10 for 10 hours, in South Extension, it will be Rs. 20 for three hours and in Nirman Vihar, Rs. 10 for half an hour. Confused? There is more. In the budgetary announcement made by the corporations so far, even the property tax rates will differ from corporation to corporation.

The North Corporation standing committee that presented its budget on Tuesday announced that there will be no hike in parking rates.

At present, all corporations have uniform parking rates of Rs. 10 for 10 hours.

The only hike that was announced by the North municipal body was in the non-residential properties from the existing 15% to 18%.

“In our election manifesto, we had promised that we will not hike taxes so we have not touched the taxes of residential colonies,” said standing committee chairman Yogender Chandolia.

Speaking about the confusion that will arise out of different parking rates in the city, Chandolia said that they are not in a position to hike charges till the time they can ensure that the contractors of parking sites follow rules correctly. “Many of our parking sites need to be tendered. Till all facilities are in place, we will not hike parking charges,” he said.

According to senior leaders, however, the final call will be taken by the BJP that rules all the three corporations, which may ultimately ask them to keep the rates uniform. “The budget is passed in the House that is still a month away. We will discuss the issue with the party leadership and implement whatever is decided by it,” said Subhash Arya, leader of House, South Corporation.
