‘Conduct survey on religious structures’

The Delhi cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod for conducting a survey to identify religious structures on streets, parks and in other public places.

"This is being done on the Supreme Court's directions. It will present a data on the number of such structures in the city. The revenue department has been asked to coordinate with the other departments and file a status report," said a senior government official.

Sources said earlier, too, the government had carried out a similar survey on structures on gram sabha land in the city.

"During that survey, we found that there were approximately 200 religious structures that had come up on public land. However, it was felt that a similar exercise should be carried out in the rest of the city too. Following this, a cabinet approval has been given to conduct a new survey, which will be a detailed one," he added.

Sources added that the government was planning to fix the responsibility on those officers who turn a blind eye to such unauthorised constructions. "The matter is sub-judice, so any action, if at all, has to be taken will be decided by the court," added the official.
