"There should be no compromise on security. People who take law in their hands should be dealt with sternly. There is no place for violence in a civil society and we condemn those who are engaged in violence," Party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad told reporters.

He was responding to questions on the killing of Jharkhand police inspector Francis Induwar by Maoists, who had kidnapped him nearly a week back. His beheaded body was found on Tuesday.

"Our heart-felt sympathies are with the family members (of the slain officer). We appeal to the Jharkhand government to extend all possible help to his family members," the Congress leader said.

Ahmad said the government has taken a number of steps to tackle the naxal problem, like earmarking a fund of Rs 500 crore for police modernisation in affected states and constitution of a COBRA force.
