Sharma, a former Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, died around 1 am in the hospital due to cardiac arrest, DPCC Chief J P Agarwal said.

Condoling his death, Agarwal said, his demise was a loss to Delhi Congress as he was a dedicated and sincere worker.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons.

Sharma was elected to the Delhi Assembly for second time in last year's polls from Rohtas Nagar constituency. He was first elected in 2003.

He was the DPCC Chief from 2003 to 2007, after which Agarwal took over.

Sharma began his political career as a worker of National Students' Union of India (NSUI).

Earlier, he twice successfully contested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House polls and became the Leader of the House and Chairman of the Standing Committee in the MCD.
