The Delhi University's honours course in journalism has been steadily gaining popularity over the years. Though the course is offered only by five colleges, three of which are women's colleges, the interest level in the course is quite high.

BA (Hons) journalism combines theoretical and practical elements of the study of contemporary journalism in all its forms, including print, broadcast and online media.

Students dabble in a wide range of subjects such as political science, economics, international relations and advertising.

The course was revised last year and more papers regarding broadcast journalism were added. The last two semesters of the course include a seminar on a current issue and a dissertation on a topic of their choice.

"Since we follow a semester system, each subject we study in these three years is a particular area/field that is relevant to the world of journalism. The idea is to hone the skills of future journalists in such a manner that they can hold their own in the professional industry," said Stuti Govil, who studies journalism at Kamala Nehru College.

Teachers' space
"The new syllabus revised last year includes cultural studies. It is helping students in getting some theoretical background to understand journalistic practices all over the world. Students who opt for the course should have an analytical mind and should be aware," said Ramesh Kumar, teacher in-charge, journalism, Kamla Nehru College.

Students have an option of working in media organisations, advertising agencies and web portals.

"Many students also go in for further studies in fields such as political science, history and economics," he added.
