Contrary to popular belief, psychologists are not mind-readers. They study human behaviour and mental processes. With a total of 12 papers, DU's undergraduate course is a well-balanced mix of theory and practical application.

In the first year, students are introduced to the basics of psychology. The course proceeds, in the second year, to more theoretical aspects with papers in social psychology, systems and theories. In final year, students study abnormal and developmental psychology as their two main papers, along with other optional papers. It is accompanied by a project and a field report along with other practicals.

"The course largely has theory-heavy papers and some papers which have a touch of psycho-physics in them. But one doesn't need to be a science student to take up the course," said Meghna Bohidar, a final-year psychology student at IP College for Women.

Teacher's space
For students interested in behavioural sciences and also have good communication skills, psychology can be a promising stream. Counselling, though one of the most popular fields, is not the only one. "Fields like social work and HR management are open. Special education as an option is also gaining popularity," said Gulgoona Jamal, who teaches psychology in Zakir Husain College.
