Metropolitan Magistrate Muneesh Garg granted bail to 43-year-old Karnail Singh, president of the All India Sikhs Students Federation, after he furnished a personal bond of Rs 20,000 and two sureties. Singh has been asked not to leave the country without the permission of the court.

The prosecution opposed his bail plea, saying his act was meant to “hamper court proceedings” and showed “disrespect” to a senior judicial officer.

Immediately after the incident, Singh had told reporters that he did not want to show disrespect to the court and his intention was only to protest and display the anger of the Sikh community, who had eagerly awaited justice for long.

“But the court by acquitting the main accused and senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar clearly showed that we could never expect justice,” he said.

Jail term for another

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday upheld the 10-year jail term awarded to a man by a trial court for his involvement in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in Kalyanpuri area of east Delhi.

Justice RV Easwar dismissed the appeal filed by Shabnam, alias Mukri, against the trial court’s order. According to the prosecution, the FIR was lodged against Mukri on a complaint filed by woman who lost three of her sons in the riot that had broken on November 1, 1984.
