Doctors support anti-graft movement

Hundreds of senior doctors and students at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims) and Safdarjung Hospital held candle-light marches in the hospitals in support of the anti-corruption movement on Tues-day evening, post OPD duties.

Protesting the arrest of Anna Hazare, doctors in their respective campuses shouted slogans against the government and police, demanding his quick release. “We may not agree with either side — government or Team Anna entirely, but we do believe in the need for a corruption free society,” said a doctor from Aiims. “This is the first time someone has dared to raise voice against a prevalent evil. We have also joined in to see the movement reach its logical end,” he said.

“We are the future of India, we have to stand up against anarchy and corruption. Otherwise one day we will be swallowed by this giant of corruption,” said Dr Debjyoti Karmakar, president, resident doctors association, Aiims.

“This is a social movement, and we want to be part of this because we are victims of the corruption that is prevalent in society. Anna through this movement is trying to make a change and make the government understand that the common man is tired of having to deal with rampant corruption,” said a doctor from Society of Young Scientists at Aiims.

Even at Safdarjung Hospital, emotions reigned high as support for Anna kept growing with each passing hour. “The country is rotting because we the aware, intelligent Indian citizens have no say in the policy making and working of our nation. It is time we wake up to the need of the hour and put in our little bit, to wipe-off corruption,” said a doctor from Safdarjung Hospital.
