Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi on Saturday urged the Union home minister P Chidambaram to avoid falling prey to the “pressure tactics” of Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikhshit on the issue of trifurcation of MCD.

Abbi said since the issue is very important to the 1.67 crore citizens of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the ministry should take its time in studying the proposal and finding out its feasibility.

“CM Dikshit is using pressure tactics to get the clearance on trifurcation of the MCD while the Union home ministry wishes to go into each detail legally and technically,” Abbi said.

The mayor urged the ministry to check if the proposed trifurcation will be in interest of the citizens of Delhi and would help in providing civic services.

“It should not entail huge additional financial burden as well as not add to the multiplicity of authorities. The demarcation of boundaries should not hamper the uniform development of the city. Such issue certainly needs time to study in detail the pros and cons and its impact,” she said.

The mayor’s reaction comes after media reports surfaced that the home ministry has cleared the trifurcation.
