Drunk drivers are facing the heat in Delhi, with the number of offenders prosecuted till September 40% higher than in the same period last year.
HT ImageOf the 18,524 motorists prosecuted, 5,304 were punished with jail terms - 125% more than last year. The rest had to pay a fine of Rs. 2,000.
"This record prosecution has helped reduce accidents at night this year," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
Traffic police statistics show a 19% drop in road accidents till September as compared to the same period in 2011.
Most of the drunken driving cases were found in south Delhi.
