The Joint Action Front for Democratic Education, which comprises DU teachers and other members such as Dalit leader Udit Raj, has demanded that a committee of eminent persons be constituted to look at the pros and cons of the new programme and implement it, only if they find it fit.

Calling for a national debate on the matter, they have asked the HRD ministry to formulate a policy on the matter, if necessary. However, Delhi police have refused permission for demonstration outside Gandhi's residence.

"They had called us for permission but we informed them that Section 144 of CrPc is in force in the area. We have advised them to hold a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar. We will try to get them an appointment with the office of Sonia Gandhi for representation," said a senior police officer.
