The civic body has decided to provide mobile phones to rickshaw pullers in the city. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in its budget for the financial year 2011-12, has given the nod to allow 100-odd battery operated e-rickshaws to ply in each of its 272 wards.

Depending on its success, the civic agency will give permission to operate more such rickshaws.

“These rickshaws are eco-friendly. We will allow rickshaw pullers to carry mobile phones, so that people can call them whenever needed,” said Subhash Arya, leader of the MCD house.

According to the civic agency, the mobile phones will be provided free of cost to the rickshaw pullers. “We have asked the MCD commissioner to prepare a detailed proposal in this regard which will be implemented soon,” added Arya.

To begin with, a list of such rickshaw pullers with their numbers will be displayed on the MCD website. “We will also display the numbers in citizen service bureaux and MCD zonal offices,” said a senior MCD official.
