Facelift to keep ISBT shut for four months

Giving momentum to its redevelopment plan, the transport department has decided to suspend its bus operations from Kashmere Gate inter-state bus terminal (ISBT).

Transport officials said the ISBT will be closed sometime next week and no inter-state bus will touch this terminus for "at least four months".

Buses meant for Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh will now originate and terminate at Anand Vihar ISBT in east Delhi, while to board buses for other northern states like Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Punjab and Rajasthan, passengers will have to go to Sarai Kale Khan, an transport official said.

There are about 2,000 inter-state buses and 400 city buses that ply from Kashmere Gate. The city bus service, however, will remain unaffected. "Several inter-state buses will continue to pick or drop passengers at the Ring Road opposite ISBT on way from or to the designated terminals, but will not enter the ISBT."

Constructed in 1976, the Kashmere Gate building requires a facelift at the earliest. The project will be taken up in two phases. In first phase, the passenger area will be renovated. The façade of the building will be changed to give it a new look besides modern facilities provided. In second phase, it will be inter-linked with Metro station, the official said.
