Former RAW official given bail

A former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer accused of disclosing classified information through a book on India's external intelligence agency was released on bail on Monday.

A former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer accused of disclosing classified information through a book on India's external intelligence agency was released on bail on Monday.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja allowed interim bail to Maj. Gen. (retd) V.K. Singh, former joint secretary of RAW, on personal and two surety bonds of Rs.100,000 each till July 18.

Singh and Vivek Garg of Manas Publication were accused of revealing certain secret information through Singh's book "India's External Intelligence: Secrets of RAW" in violation of the Official Secrets Act.

The officer appeared before the court following summons issued against him. The court had already taken cognisance of the charge sheet filed against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Jan 31.

The CBI Sep 20, 2007, registered a case against Singh and Garg for allegedly violating Section 5 (wrongful communication of information) of the act. It also charged Singh under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
