“Why deemed university at all? Don't you think the status of deemed university should be abolished in all the states?,” a bench headed by Justice Dalveer Bhandari asked during the hearing of a 2006 petition by advocate Viplav Sharma.
Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam told the bench , “This issue is also being looked into by the government.”
The court asked the Centre to file an affidavit detailing the number of private educational institutions, which had been accorded the status of deemed university since 2006.
It also sought to know the numbers of private educational institutions that have been denied the status of deemed university or are currently under consideration of the government.
