The Supreme Court order asking the Centre to consider an archaeological survey to ascertain whether the Ram Setu can was an ancient monument and to consider pushing the venture through other alignments came as a relief to the Congress. “It gives us time in an election year,” said a party leader. Officially, though, the Congress said it would not comment on a court decision.

With the government having earlier tripped on the issue due to its affidavit, a Congress leader admitted: “It would have affected the Karnataka and year-end state polls.” But the relief is tinged with concern that the DMK may once again mount pressure on the Centre to do something.
