Gujjars seek probe into police firing

A delegation of the Gurjar Forum for Social Justice meets NHRC chairman and seeks a probe into the police firing on protesters demanding ST status in Rajasthan's Dausa district.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was on Friday approached by an organisation representing Gujjars seeking a probe into the police firing at protesters during a demonstration in Rajasthan's Dausa district last month that claimed 35 lives.

A delegation of the Gurjar Forum for Social Justice and Human Rights met NHRC Chairman Rajender Babu and sought a probe into the police firing on protesters demanding ST status for the community.

"The NHRC chairman has assured of taking adequate action in the matter," Manmeet Rawat, convener of the forum told reporters in New Delhi after meeting Babu.

Last week, another delegation from the community had approached the Commission with a similar demand.

The delegation asked the rights panel to send its team to Rajasthan to probe the police firing as was done in the case of the Nandigram violence in West Bengal and demanded that the families of the victims be adequately compensated.

It also sought penal action against the "erring officials who ordered the firing on the innocent people of the community".

"The Rajasthan government did not talk to the community members to sort out the matter for reasons best known to them with the motive to crush the protest by use of force," it said in its petition.

Earlier, students belonging to the community from across the country organised a rally to sympathise with those killed and injured in the agitation.
