Harrowing day for OBC students

Admission to Delhi University-affiliated institutions on Day 1 turns out to be a harrowing experience for many OBC category candidates, reports Ritika Chopra.

Admission to Delhi University-affiliated institutions on Day 1 turned out to be a harrowing experience for many OBC category candidates. The admission procedure in a few campus colleges was overtaken by confusion as students were unable to procure the right documents (especially OBC certificates) and this eventually led to heated debates between parents and the authorities.

“Despite our efforts to clear all doubts, many applicants went to seek admission in colleges with OBC certificates that did not carry any information about the non-creamy layer. These students, who are primarily outstation candidates, were eventually sent to the Dean Students’ Welfare (South Campus) office by the colleges to sort out their problem. Many parents were agitated on being turned down by the colleges. Close to 100 OBC candidates approached us with such doubts today,” said Dinesh C. Varshney, deputy dean, students’ welfare, DU South Campus.

“Our OBC counter was the most chaotic today. There were many candidates whose class did not appear in the central state list of OBCs provided to us by the university. Some could not procure proper income declaration documents. Parents added to our problems by not cooperating and losing their temper. Some even threatened us with dire consequences when we turned them down,” said JR Monga, media coordinator, SRCC. The college filled in close to 10 OBC seats on the first day.

Nivedita Sanwariya was one such candidate who despite getting covered in the first cut-off for SRCC could not get admission on the first day because her class was not mentioned in the central state list. “My sister’s certificate says that she belongs to the Vaishya Baniya class, but strangely Vaishya and Baniya are mentioned as two separate classes in the Bihar state list. This is causing immense confusion,” said Nivedita’s sister. SRCC admitted close to 10 OBC candidates on Friday.

Confusion was generated not only because of wrong documents. Colleges, too, made mistakes as the central state list provided to them by the university turned out to be incomplete. The state of Manipur was surprisingly missing from the list and this forced Ramjas College to not admit five Manipuri students on Day 1. But the university corrected it in the evening and sent a new list to the colleges immediately. Ramjas admitted about five OBC candidates in all on Friday.
