High cut-offs lead to two protests in one day

Protesting under the banner of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM)—BJP’s youth wing—the students raised slogans against the Central and state governments and against HRD minister Kapil Sibal.

Holding Sibal responsible for the poor state of affairs of higher education, BJP pradesh president Vijender Gupta said the minister has done nothing to improve the education system of the country.

“The question paper of an engineering entrance exam was leaked during his tenure, but no enquiry was conducted. There has been continuous decline in the standards of medical, engineering and general college education,” Gupta alleged.

He also added that in its two tenures, the Congress-led government neither set up a new college nor increased the number of seats adequately. This led to high cut-offs, he said.

Meanwhile, another group of DU students led by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)—affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh—protested against SRCC’s high cut-offs. The students marched from the Arts faculty to the college, but were not allowed to meet its principal, said an ABVP spokesperson.

“About 100 students wanted to meet the principal, but he did not bother to meet us. Such high cut-offs discourage students,” ABVP spokesperson Rohit Chahal said.
