Perhaps it takes the dramatic way in which she has portrayed her cause to be regarded seriously. Shahana Sheikh (20), a student of Lady Shriram College in Delhi has stunned most Delhiites by writing a 98-page thesis on public toilets in Delhi. She was moved by the sight of an old woman cleaning a public toilet while a man was using the wall outside to relieve himself. The courts have weighed in on the side of this advocate of public utilities and asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to study her paper and file a report in a month. She has also gone into the economics of the matter, concluding that a poor family has to shell out at least Rs 37 per day to use public toilet and bath facilities while the householder earns Rs 100 a day. Surely, this should raise a stink somewhere in the higher echelons of officialdom.
